Schachdame No. 2 — Helmut Westerkamp

 

 

Schachdame No. 2 begins with an intriguing artistic question: what happens when the strict geometry of a chessboard meets the organic curves of the human body?

Helmut Westerkamp constructs the sculpture from carefully joined walnut and maple, creating a precise pattern of contrasting light and dark wood. As this regular, two-dimensional order travels across the three-dimensional female form, the geometry begins to transform. Straight lines bend, squares distort and new shapes emerge.

What begins as structure becomes movement.

The chessboard seems almost to wrap itself around the woman like a garment — concealing and revealing her at the same time. She appears clothed in geometry and yet almost bare.

Behind this visual idea lies considerable technical complexity. The unusual orientation and combination of the wood required Westerkamp to work against some of the material’s natural tendencies. The apparent ease and softness of the finished figure therefore conceal an exacting process and remarkable control of the material.

For Westerkamp, the chessboard also carries a personal memory. Chess reaches back to his childhood and to games played with his grandfather. Here, however, the familiar board leaves the table and becomes something entirely different: a female presence, monumental in scale and quietly commanding.

Helmut Westerkamp demonstrates not only exceptional technical mastery, but an extraordinary sensitivity to the human form.

Walnut and maple, assembled into a strict geometric order, surrender beneath the sculptor’s hands. Straight lines begin to bend. Squares follow the curves of hips, shoulders and limbs. Geometry becomes movement; structure becomes softness.

And somewhere within this transformation, the material seems to lose its weight.

The woman does not appear imposed upon the wood. She seems to have been there all along — waiting to be revealed.

This is perhaps where Westerkamp’s mastery is felt most profoundly: in the restraint of his intervention. His hands do not merely carve a female figure; they allow her to emerge — sensual yet serene, strong yet delicate, clothed in geometry and at the same time almost bare.

Until, beneath the hands of the sculptor, wood becomes woman.

And the Queen reveals herself.

There is something remarkable in the delicacy Helmut Westerkamp is able to draw from a material as strong and uncompromising as wood.

Behind the apparent softness of every curve lies extraordinary discipline, patience and determination — the countless hours required to achieve such precision, balance and perfection of detail.

Westerkamp does not simply master his material. He gives it presence.

To encounter one of his sculptures is to understand that its impact reaches beyond form, technique and craftsmanship. It changes the space around it.
